Many of you have contacted us asking how to help with the relief efforts for Fort MacMurray in response to the fires that have cause the evacuation of over 90,000 residents.  Because of the widespread media attention and wealth of information out there leading people to give, we are passing on this information to you and asking you to take the initiative to give where you can, as generously as you can.  Please keep in mind that right now, the best, most effective thing you can give is a donation to the Red Cross, as those donations are being matched by provincial and federal governments, spreading your dollar even further.

  • Money:  Donate to the Red Cross. You can also donate $5 by texting “REDCROSS” to 30333. The Alberta and federal governments have said they will match private donations to the Red Cross.

  • Supplies: Here’s a crowdsourced Facebook page to connect Fort McMurray residents needing items with volunteers providing them.
  • Volunteers: Those interested in volunteering through the regional municipality can apply here.

At our Connect services, we will continue to support the partnering organizations we have chosen for this month because we believe that they do not have the benefit of having widespread media attention and are placing already vulnerable people at an even higher risk. Our donations this month will go to support the Drought Relief efforts in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia through Hands at Work and Canadian Humanitarian. These communities do not have the resources of a government involvement, other communities that are able to help or the media attention that we are so fortunate to have in these situations in Canada. Please give generously to both appeals.
